Two objects are moving in the x, y plane as shown. If a net torque of 44 N∙m acts on them for 5.0 seconds, what is the change in their angular momentum?

The change in angular momentum is determined as 6 kgm²/s.

How to calculate the change in angular momentum?

The change in the angular momentum of the two objects is calculated by applying the following formula as follows;

The angular momentum of the 3 kg object;

L = mvr

where;

  • m is the mass of the object
  • v is the speed of the object
  • r is the radius of the object

L = mvr

L = (3 kg x 3 m/s x 2 m)

L = 18 kgm²/s

The angular momentum of the 6 kg object;

L = (6 kg x 2 m/s x 1 m)

L = 12 kgm²/s

The change in angular momentum is calculated as;

ΔL = 18 kgm²/s - 12 kgm²/s

ΔL = 6 kgm²/s
