But people whose opinions would say that by taking in another country would fall short of requirements because we are to focused on the world beyond our borders. so by taking in other countries when we can't even control our own is kind of an oxymoron.

However there have been times when Expansion has benefited America for instance after the battle of the Spanish-American war we gained a better trade route with china and Africa.

So in some points yes Expansion is important and can benefit your country however you also have to look within your own borders to see whether expanding will help the people within your country or harm them.
