Galileo was ordered toturn himself in to the holy office to begin trial for holding the belief that earth revolves around the sun which was deemed heretical by catholic church.Sstandard practice demanded that the accused be imprisoned and secluded during trial.

The Church thought of Galileo as a heretic but this did not stop him writing letters to explain his theory. ... Galileo protested against this stating he was too old and ill to travel to Rome but the Church insisted.
