(1) Elizabeth sat in the kitchen and washed her father’s soiled shirt. (2) She rubbed it against the washboard back and forth that was set in the basin. (3) The water quickly turned brown as Elizabeth washed the mud away. (4) Suddenly, Elizabeth heard her parents’ voices in the next room. (5) She stopped rubbing the shirt and listened closer.
(6) “William, I’m going to the sit-in tomorrow,” said her mother. (7) “Women should have a right to vote in this town.”
(8) “Victoria, of course I agree with you,” her father said. (9) “But I’m worried that the protesters will be arrested!”
(10) Elizabeth’s mother answered firmly. (11) “I’m sorry, but you can’t never change my mind. (12) I’m going to the town hall. (13) I will be there at 8 a.m. tomorrow.”
(14) “I wish you didn’t have to do this, but I understand your reasons,” said Father.
(15) Elizabeth could hear him walking. (16) He was coming toward the kitchen.
