He is a little larger than life which the reader derives from the barber's description. Although in the story he merely sits back and is shaved, the reader is aware that he is a man to be deeply feared. I the end when he reveals to the barber that he knew all along that the barber would not kill him and that he knew who he was, he really jumps out at the reader and his presence is well known and felt.
