Some friends spent a total of $12.00 on popcorn and drinks at the movie theater. A bucket of popcorn cost $2.00 and a drink cost $1.50.

A. Create an equation to represent the relationship between the number of buckets of popcorn, x, and the number of drinks, y, the friends bought for $12.00.

The friends bought 4 drinks.

Answer:

A. 12 = 2x + 1.5y

B. 3 buckets of popcorn

Explanation:

We know 12 is the total and the cost for is $2 EACH we are multiplying so it would be written as 2x same goes for the drinks except it would be 1.50y

Since we found the equation is 12 = 2x + 1.5y and we are told that y represents the number of drinks we can replace y with 4. It would look like this,

12 = 2x + 1.5(4)

After you multiply 1.5 by 4 you get 6.

12 = 2x + 6

-6 -6

6 = 2x

Now divide both sides by 2, that way you isolate the variable.

6/2 = 3

2x/2 = x

So we are left with x = 3, which means if they buy 4 drinks they will buy 3 buckets of popcorn.

Hope that helps and have a great day!
