Freed slaves wanted to go out west because they knew there were a lot of Union troops there. They also wanted to go west because there was really no one that would make them work as slaves. Also they knew the South wouldn't go battle for the West, because they would first try to capture than stronger states. The freed slaves also moved towards areas like California because they were under strong Union control, and the Union was against slavery.
