southern states had trouble rebuilding because they were so used to relying on slaves for everything that they had to figure out how to do things for themselves

Explanation: It was difficult to rebuild the Southern states after the Civil War because of their opposite thinking. The South thought that slavery should have stayed, but the North obviously did not agree with that. They thought that slavery should be illegal, but the South did not agree even after the war. This is why it was difficult to re-build the Southern states after the Civil War.
