2x - 4y = 10
x + 5y = 40

Explanation:

  • Line up the common terms (ex: x under x, y under y)
  • Try to find a common term for one variable so you can cancel it out.
  • in this case, it's easier to cancel out the x terms.
  • multiply the 2nd equation by -2. You should get -2 -20 = -80.
  • eliminate the x terms and subtract negative 10 from 4y and subtract 80 from 10.
  • you should be left with -14y = -70
  • isolate the y and you will get y equals 5.

Now that we know what y equals, plug that value into any one of the two equations.

Ex: 2x -4(5) =10

2x -20 = 10

2x =30

x =15
