Given the ratios 19/25 and 17/20, explain why you think percents are used to compare ratios when the wholes, or denominators, are different.

Answer: Well, the denominators will be multiplied by a number that will equal 100. Then you multiply the number that you used to multiply the denominator with and multiply that with the numerator. And that will give you your percentage

19/25

25•4=100

19•4=76

76/100 or 76%

17/20

20•5=100

17•5=85

85/100 or 85%

When working with percents, you do not need to convert the denominators to be common. Once they are percents, you can easily compare and contrast them without much more effort.

19 / 25 = 0.76 -> 0.76 * 100 = 76%

17 / 20 = 0.85 -> 0.85 * 100 = 85%

At a glance, we can tell that 19/25 is 9% smaller than 17/20, and more.
