Explain in words what "i" is and why we have to have imaginary numbers.

Answer:

The letter i is used to signify that a number is an imaginary number. It stand for the square root of negative one. We use i because mathematicians do not like working with negatives when using square roots, thus they invent the i to allow for more strps of calculations to be done.
