Before Cole walks his dog, his activity tracker shows he has already walked 3.8 miles. He and his dog walk 2.6 miles per hour. Write a linear equation in slope-intercept form for the number of miles, y, after x hours of walking. Find the number of miles on Cole's activity tracker after 1/2 hour of walking.

Answer:

a)
y = 2.6x + 3.8

b) 5.1 miles

Explanation:

Given

Base\ Distance = 3.8\ miles

Speed = 2.6miles/hour

Required

Determine the linear equation

Represent distance with y

Represent time with x

Distance can be determined using:

Distance = Base\ Distance + Speed * Time

This gives:

y = 3.8 + 2.6 * x

y = 3.8 + 2.6x

y = 2.6x + 3.8

b) Solve for y when x = 1/2

To do this, we simply substitute 1/2 for x in
y = 2.6x + 3.8

y = 2.6 * 1/2 + 3.8

y = 1.3+ 3.8

y = 5.1
