A pizza shop sells large pizzas for $10 plus $0.75 per topping. It also sells medium pizzas for $8 plus $1.25 per topping. A family orders one large pizza and one medium pizza. If they ordered the same number of toppings for each pizza and the two pizzas cost the same, how many toppings did they order?

Answer:

There were 4 toppings on each of the large and medium pizza

Total toppings ordered all together =8 toppings

Explanation:

Given that

same number of toppings for each pizza

Let the number of toppings be x

and the two pizzas cost the same

lets calculate for large pizza

cost of large pizza = $10

cost of 1 topping on large pizza = $0.75

since there are x topping

cost x toppings on large pizza = x*cost of 1 topping on large pizza

cost x toppings on large pizza = x*$0.75 = $0.75x

Total cost of large pizza for x topping = cost of large pizza + cost x toppings on large pizza

Total cost of large pizza for x topping = $10 + $0.75x

now

lets calculate for large pizza

cost of medium pizza = $8

cost of 1 topping on medium pizza = $1.25

since there are x topping

cost x toppings on medium pizza = x*cost of 1 topping on medium pizza

cost x toppings on medium pizza = x*$1.25 = $1.25x

Total cost of medium pizza for x topping = cost of medium pizza + cost x toppings on medium pizza

Total cost of medium pizza for x topping = $8 + $1.25x

Given that

the two pizzas cost the same

thus,

Total cost of large pizza for x topping = Total cost of medium pizza for x topping

10 + 0.75x = 8 + 1.25x

subtracting 0.75 x from both side

10 + 0.75x - 0.75x = 8 + 1.25x - 0.75x

=> 10 = 8 + 0.50x

subtracting 8 from both sides

=> 10 - 8 = 8 + 0.50x - 8

=> 2 = 0.50x

dividing both side by 0.50

=> 2/0.50 = 0.50x/0.50

=> x = 4

Thus,

There were 4 toppings on each of the large and medium pizza

Total toppings ordered all together was 4 + 4 = 8 toppings
