Answer:

lifeguarding: 6 hours

tutoring: 10 hours

Explanation:

First, to be able to tell apart the two jobs, use the variable x and y for them. use x for lifeguarding and y for tutoring. Since you have the pay per hour, you can create an expression for his pay:

11x + 22y

Then, write a system of equations to be able to find both variables.

If Parker worked a total of 16 hours, then you know that the combined amount of worked hours will be:

x + y = 16

If Parker earned a total of $242, then you know that his combined pay will be:

11x + 22y = $242

Now, you solve the system of equations (IMAGE.A):

First, solve for x:

11x + 22y = 242

11x = 242 – 22y

x = 22 – 2y

Now, plug in the x-value in the other equation:

x + y = 16

22 – 2y + y = 16

22 – y = 16

–y = –6

y = 6

This means that he has worked 6 tutoring hours.

Now, plug in the y-value to find the x-value:

11x + 22y = 242

11x + 22(6) = 242

11x + 132 = 242

11x = 110

x = 10

this means that he has worked 10 lifeguarding hours.
