Sam made a shirt using 1/3 yards of green fabric and 1/8 yards of yellow fabric. How many yards of fabric did he use in all?

Write your answer as a fraction in simplest form.

Explanation:

1/3 + 1/8 =

LCD of 3 and 8 is 24

= 8/8 * 1/3 + 3/3 * 1/8

= 8/24 + 3/24

= 11/24

Answer: 11/24

Add the two together:

1/3 + 1/8

Rewrite the fractions with a common denominator:

3 x 8 = 24

1/3 x 8 = 8/24

1/8 x 3 = 3/24

Now you have 8/24 + 3/24 = 11/24
