Damarcus was sitting with Kyle at lunch, an empty seat between them. Jason, the new student, didn't have any friends yet. Yesterday Damarcus had seen him eating alone, so today he caught his eyes as Jason exited the lunch line. Just then, Miguel walked up with a tray. "Anyone sitting here?" he asked. "Well, um, no, not exactly . . . "Damarcus began. "But, you see . . ."He trailed off. He didn't know what to say to Miguel. He really wanted Jason to feel welcome, and he didn't see anyone else offering him a seat at their table. He felt torn.

Miguel's face fell. He picked up his tray. "Fine, then," he said. "You don't have to explain." He stormed off. Damarcus felt awful.

Answer:

C

Step-by-step explanation:

Damarcus wants to be kind to Jason, and is so saving a seat for him. Miguel unexpectedly walked over, and this leads to Damarcus being unsure on who to give his spare seat to. He ultimately struggles to explain why Miguel can't have the seat, and this leads to Miguel taking it as an offence, and not allowing Damarcus to explain. Because of this, Miguel wrongly concluded that Damarcus doesn't like him, and takes it as an insult as it sounded like Damarcus didn't like Miguel.
