Scott runs 3 km in 30 minutes and then rests for 15 minutes. He then runs 2 km in 15

minutes. What was Scott's average speed?

Explanation:

Speed = Distance/Time

If Scott runs 3 km in 30 minutes, his spped during this period is:

Time = 30min = 0.5hr

Speed = 3/0.5

Speed = 6km/hr

If he then runs 2 km in 15 minutes.

Time = 15mins = 0.25hr

His speed at this time = 2/0.25

Speed = 8km/hrr

Average speed = 6+8 = 14km/hr

Note that his speed is zero when he was at rest.
