Complete Question

Owen solves this problem. He says the difference is 127. Explain the mistake Owen made. What is the correct difference?

335 - 218 =??

Answer:

The correct difference is :

335 - 218

= 117

Explanation:

The correct difference is given below

(2)

335

-218

_____

117

_____

The Mistake Owen made was:

5 - 8 = He added 1 to 5 from 3 , making it 15

15 - 8 = 7

Since 1 has be taken from 3, it reduces to 2, Hence, 2 - 1 = 1 .

This is where Owen made his mistake, He did not reduce 3 to 2 after adding 1 1 from 3 to 5.

So, He subtracted 1 from 3 to give him 2. This is wrong.
