    antagonist

  • One who opposes and contends against another; an adversary.
  • The principal character in opposition to the protagonist or hero of a narrative or drama.
  • Physiology A muscle that counteracts the action of another muscle, the agonist.


What does an antagonist usually do in a story?

The role of the antagonist is to prevent the hero or protagonist from accomplishing his or her objective. You can think of the antagonist as the villain. Explanation: A classic example would be in Batman, where Batman is the hero and the Joker is the antagonist. An antagonist typically wrecks havoc on the protagonist.
