Why were immigrants characterized by some Americans as competition for American workers?

Many immigrants come to America out of necessity, and will look for any job that will hire them. As a result, employers can pay immigrants less because they are desperate for the job, and will take it regardless of how little they pay. American workers consider immigrants competition because Americans usually have much more power to negotiate with an employer to get more pay, but this is ineffective when an immigrant takes their job without needing to negotiate a wage.
