So C is correct but the solution wasn't because x and y both don't equal to 1. Here is the way to do it:

We work first on the second equation.


x + (1)/(y) = 3

Combine the two terms:


(xy+1)/(y) = 3

Since we know


xy=1

We can replace it:


(1+1)/(y) = 3

We can then solve that y = 2/3.

Then, we can plug this value back into the equation


xy=1

and get x = 3/2.

So, 2x + 3y does equal 5 but this is how you get there.
