During the American Civil war which occurred between 1861 and 1865, the Union under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln took away or violated the Civil Rights or Liberties of the people in a certain way.

This was basically on Restriction on freedom of speech and freedom of press: the purpose is to dissuade the Confederate sympathizers from discouraging people into the enlistment of the Union army and at the time, prevent leaking of military information. Also, restrictions were placed on freedom of the press to prevent newspapers from disseminating battle plans. As a result, there were a series of arrests without due legal processes.
