you start by seeing how many times 8 goes into (7) which is zero Then you add the (8).

how many times does 8 go into 78 = 9 with 6 left over.

you bring the 6 down and the next 8 giving you (68) = 8 with 4 left over

so you bring the 4 and the two down giving you (42) = 5 with 2 left over.

so your answer is 985 remainder 2

An easy way to divide by larger numbers is to see if the divisor fits into the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones place.

8 doesn't go into 7, so you'd bring down the number in the hundreds place and so on and so forth.
