Are complex numbers considered real numbers?

on this assignment, it's asking me to select which expressions simplify to a real number. some of them (which i already selected) simplify to real numbers but some of the others simplify to a complex number like (3 + i)(i - 4) = -13 - i. can -13 - i be considered a real number or no because it's complex?
