He [Buck] had killed man, the noblest game of all, and he had killed in the face of the law of club and fang. He sniffed the bodies curiously. They had died so easily. It was harder to kill a husky dog than them. They were no match at all, were it not for their arrows and spears and clubs. Thenceforward he would be unafraid of them except when they bore in their hands their arrows, spears, and clubs.

In this excerpt one of the things that Buck learned is that without clubs and whips humans are not that scary. He also learned that he does not have chose to go by the law of club and fang because he just broke it. He had killed a man easily. What Buck had learned from this experience was that humans are one of the easiest things to kill. Buck thought that, “It was harder to kill a husky dog than them”. (London 64)

The main action of the story begins with Buck learning to fear man. His first lesson is that he must obey, because of the club and everything that it represents.In the final pages of the novel, Buck overcomes that fear. Driven by rage, he discovers that he doesn't have to obey after all. "He had killed in the face of the law of club and fang" and now he is free. Although Buck knows to respect the weapons of man, they no longer compel him to give in completely.The phrases I chose were "He sniffed the bodies curiously. They had died so easily. It was harder to kill a husky dog than them. They were no match at all, were it not for their arrows and spears and clubs.".I chose these phrases because they hint that Buck is starting to learn a lesson about what he has done and what he realizes from his actions and what he has learned.
