I have found it helpful to connect that symbolization to the human experience. For example, a painting that depicts a person in the corner of a dark room, their knees hugged to their chest, might represent helplessness, darkness and sorrow, which is all part of the human experience. It's also important to note the colors being used. All those components, the expressions on someone's faces, the shapes, the colors, they add to a certain emotion being illustrated. That emotion connects to the human experience. I guess you just think about what that piece of art makes you feel or think of when you look at it. From there, just go a bit deeper.
