Step-by-step explanation:

During DNA replication, the two strands of DNA are separated and replicated via distinct mechanisms.

The leading strand is synthesised continuously by DNA polymerase in the 5'-3' direction.

However, DNA polymerase can only work in one direction (5'-3') so the other strand cannot be synthesised continuously in the reverse direction.

The other strand, the lagging strand, has to be synthesised discontinuously in the 5'-3' direction. This forms fragments- called Okazaki fragments - that are later joined up.
