How is it possible for new crust to be formed without increasing the surface area of the earth?

Because the Earth is not getting bigger, an equal area of crust must be destroyed in order for the new basaltic crust to form. This takes place at subduction zones, where the denser basaltic rock gets shoved underneath less dense continental crust.
