Box and whisker plots are called "box and whisker plots" because of the way that the lower quartile, mean, median, upper quartile, minimum, and the maximum all work together to come up with a box and whisker plot. Another reason is because when the number are on a number line and the box and whisker plot is on the top it looks rather similar to a cat with the minimum and the maximum on both ends with the median becoming the nose.
