on the first quadrant x and y are both positive

in the second one x is negative and y positive so -x/y=-1

on the third quadrant x and y are both negative

so -x/-y=1

on the fourth quadrant x is positive and y negative so

x/-y=-1

here, in all cases x and y are taken the same length that's why we take always 1 or -1
