Explanation:

Given

  • [1]
    y=x+6
  • [2]
    y=-2x-3

If we subtract equation [2] from equation [1] we will be left with an equation in only 1 unknown
(x)

=3x+9

We can now split the variable term and the constant (one on each side of the equation by subtracting
3x rom both sides.

-3x=9

Dividing by
(-3) leaves just the variable x equal to a constant

x=-3

To find the value of y substitute this value
(-3) in place of x in one of the original equations. (I will use equation [1])
