Subtract the
x^2 terms from each other, then the
x terms, then the ones without any
x whatsoever.

(12x^2 - 8x + 12) - (9x^2 +22x-46)

First, we'll subtract
9x^2 from
12x^2

12x^2-9x^2- = 3x^2

Result:
3x^2

Next, we'll subtract
22x from
-8x

-8x - 22x = -30x

Result:
-30x

Finally, we'll subtract
-46 from
12

12-(-46) = 12+46 = 58

Result:
58

Now, we can add these 3 results together.

First, we had
3x^2, then
-30x, and finally
58.

Thus, our subtraction of

(12x^2 - 8x + 12) - (9x^2 +22x-46)

equals

3x^2-30x+58
