North America and Asia are moving toward each other at a rate of about one inch per year. Why are the continents moving so slowly?

This is because tectonic plates shift plate locations very rarely. Their movement is caused by the heat and pressure inside of them that causes them to expand. It takes a lot of energy to cause the expansion of a tectonic plate. Hence the process takes millions of years to fully complete
