Republican President Richard Nixon resigned (quit) the presidency in 1973, the only president to ever do so. He had been responsible for illegal actions when he had people spy on the Democrats so he could win re-election in 1972. They broke into the Democrats headquarters in the Watergate hotel, and the scandal has been called “Watergate” ever since. Nixon’s vice president, Gerald Ford, became president, then he pardoned Nixon for any crimes he may have committed.
