The Hardest Job
One morning, Larry was surprised to wake and find his mother still in bed. His father told Larry that his mother was very ill. She wouldn’t be able to do any household chores today.
“Larry, today the responsibility of looking after the household chores falls upon you,” his father told him. This news worried Larry a little. He had never had so much responsibility before. But it also brought a feeling of excitement because it was the first time his father had asked him to help with something important. Larry wanted to make his father proud.
After his father left for work, Larry began his chores. First he made some breakfast and brought it to his mother. His mother was delighted by this. Then he cleaned the apartment and washed the dishes. This chore put him in a bad mood. He found it incredibly boring and wondered how his mother could do it every single day. He also looked after his two-year-old brother. Jamie was a bundle of mischief. It took all of Larry’s efforts and patience to keep him out of trouble.
Larry’s father returned that evening. He was happy when Larry’s mother talked about the hard work Larry had done during the day. Larry felt extremely proud of himself, and so did his father. Larry had also gained a new respect for his mother. He had never realized what a difficult job it is to be a mother.
