Why did the introduction of sound into film initially impede the movements of actors ?

When sound was introduced to film, many of the actors and actresses were out of work because their voices did not transfer well to "talkies". Microphones, either stationary or hidden in the actors' props and costumes, hindered the movements of actors. They were so clunky they couldn't move at all or else everything would fall apart.
