Dietary Guidelines were amended to recommend consumption levels of up 30 percent per day of grains and added the caveat that half of those grains should be whole grains rather than refined grains. Research shows that refining wheat decreases vitamins and eliminates fiber. In 2011 the USDA Dietary Guidelines were further amended with some significant changes in portion and serving sizes.
