Alicia and sarah are at the supermarket. Alicia wants to get peanuts from the bulk food bins and Sarah wants to get almonds. The almonds cost $5.50 per pound and the peanuts cost $2.50 per pound. Together they buy 1.6 pounds of nuts. If the total cost is $6.75, how much did each girl get?

Answer:

Alicia gets $2.50*0.91= $2.275

Sarah gets $5.50 *0.68=$3.74

Explanation:

let the almond be x pounds

and the peanuts be y pounds

so

x+y=1.6--------1

5.5x+2.5y=6.75---2

let us multiply both eqn 1 by 5.5 to to eleminate x

and subtract eqn 2 from the new eqn

5.5x+5.5y=8.8-----3

-5.5x+2.5y=6.75---2

0+3x=2.05

divide both sides by 3 we have

x=2.05/3

x=0.68 pound

put x=0.68 in eqn 1 we have

0.68+y=1.6

y=1.6-0.68

y=0.91 pounds

Alicia gets $2.50*0.91= $2.275

Sarah gets $5.50 *0.68=$3.74
