So, because of this we set these two equal. 3x-10=x+40

Do the algebra. Subtract x on both sides and add 10 on both sides.

This gives you 2x = 50.

Divide by 2 on both sides.

This gives you x=25

Great. Now we know what x is, so x=25 Now we have to plug this in.

3(25) - 10 = 65

25+40 = 65
