In the first excerpt, the writer uses a parallel plot to show how two characters and settings are linked through the symbol of violets. The nonlinear narrative gives the reader a better understanding of the connection between the characters. The linear narrative in the second excerpt provides the reader with information about how the main character is feeling. It also tells readers more about the everyday life of the character.

For the first one they use the nonlinear one to give a narrative to give a better feel of the charcter, and they also use flashback inform us about the characters past.
