Let oxidation state of V be x

In VO2+

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x-2=2$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x=2+2$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x=+4$

In VO_4^3-

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x+2(-4)=-3$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x-8=-3$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x=-3+8$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto x=+5$
