Dewayne and Julio are training for a bicycle race. They left from the same

point at the same time, riding in opposite directions. After 2 hours, they are
90 miles apart, and Julio's average rate is 10 miles per hour slower than
Dewayne's. If r represents Dewayne's average rate, which equation can be
used to find this rate?

After 2 hours, distance apart is 90 miles

Julio's average speed = 10 miles per hour slower than

Dewayne's

Lets assume Dewayne's average speed to be : r miles per hour

So ;

Julio's speed will be : r - 10 miles per hour

The formula for average speed is : distance covered/ time taken

For Dewayne's speed it will be : 90/2 = r-10 -----the equation

45 = r-10

45-10 = r

35 mph = r

Thus Dewayne's rate is 35 mph and Julio's rate is 35-10 = 25 mph.
