Answer:

Explanation:

3s + 4p = 96 -------> 3s = 96 - 4p

We are also told

6s + 5p = 147

Note: 6s = 2 x 3s

So this means we can re-write the above equation as :

6s + 5p = 147

2(3s) + 5p = 147

2 ( 96 - 4p) + 5p = 147

192 - 8p + 5p = 147

192 - 3p = 147

Add 3p to both sides

192 = 147 + 3p

Subtract 147 from both sides

192 - 147 = 3p

45 = 3p

Divide both sides by 3 to find "p".

p = 45/3 = 15 (Pants cost $15)

Now since we know "p" we can substitute this value into the equation at the beginning

3s = 96 - 4p

3s = 96 - 4(15)

3s = 96 - 60

3s = 36

Divide both sides by 3 to find "s".

s = 36/3 = 12 (Shirts cost $12)
