Looking at the map you can tell that the Southern states had way more enslaved people than the Northern states. This was because the South's economy was based on Plantation Agriculture that relied heavily on enslaved labor.

Sometime in the early 19th century, Britain began to sell manufactured goods at a rate so cheap to America that businesses in the North were making losses as they could not compete. The Government decided that a tariff would save the day but states in the South were vehemently opposed to this.

They argued that if tariffs were imposed, Britain would export less goods to them which means Britain would be unable to afford to buy much of the cotton that the South was selling to them.
