What is the difference between naming a segment and writing its distance?

In naming a segment, we are essentially naming a line that has definite starting and endpoints. For example if the starting point of the segment is A and the endpoint is B, we can name it "segment AB".

In another example, a segment can be named with a single letter. For example the point from A to B can be referred to as "segment y" if AB is part of maybe a square.

Whereas, in writing a distance, we are essentially writing the measurement of length between the two endpoints. For example if the distance between AB is 20 metres, we can write distance between AB = 20 metres
