Answer: The Authors Purpose in Old Yeller is to inform you that not all things in life end happily ever after. Because Old Yeller passes away, Travis and Arliss are sad, but they soon realize that their new puppy is just as good as Old Yeller. Also, the author's other purpose was to entertain you.
