Explanation:

Based on observation, sum of diameters of small circles = diameter of the big circle.

In question, diameter of big circle = 12 mm.

And radius of big circle = 12mm/2 = 6mm

Let the diameter of each small circle be '2a'. So, radius of each small = 2a/2 = a.

=> 2a + 2a = 12mm

=> 4a = 12mm

=> a = 3mm

=> radius of each small circle = 3mm

Area of big circle = πr²

= (3.14)(6mm)²

= 113.04 mm²

Area covered by 2 small circles is: 2 * area of 1 one circle.

=> 2 * π(3mm)² = 18π mm²

=> 56.52 mm²

Shaded area = total area - area of 2 circles = 113.04 - 56.52 mm² = 56.52 mm²
