A conference will take place in a large hotel meeting room. The organizers of the conference have created a drawing for how to arrange the room. The scale indicates that 1/2 inch on the drawing corresponds to 12 feet in the actual room. In the scale drawing, the length of the room is 3 1/3 inches. What is the actual length of the room?

Answer:

The actual length of the room is 40 feet

Explanation:

Given

Scale = (1)/(2)\ inch : 12\ feet

Required

Determine the actual measurement of
3(1)/(3)\ inches

Represent the required actual measurement with x

i.e.

3(1)/(3)\ inches : x

And we have:

(1)/(2)\ inch : 12\ feet

3(1)/(3)\ inches : x

Cross Multiply

x * (1)/(2) = 12 * 3(1)/(3)

Convert fraction to improper fraction

x * (1)/(2) = 12 *(10)/(3)

(x)/(2) = (120)/(3)

(x)/(2) = 40

Multiply both sides by 2

x = 40 * 2

x = 80\ feet

The actual length of the room is 40 feet
