Answer:

The population of each Sumerian city continued to rise. Kings quickly realized that they needed to expand the borders of their kingdoms to meet their subjects’ needs. The population outgrew the area, and a competition began for both land and resources. Each kingdom suddenly wanted to secure the natural resources that once had been shared. It wasn’t long before the desire to expand cities’ borders led to war. Each kingdom isolated itself by constructing huge walls around its city. The people built fortifications to protect themselves from possible invasions. As a result of this warfare, success on the battlefield became the most important qualification for being king. The man selected was usually the one who could lead an army to victory. Sumer had become a land of divided and isolated kingdoms that were constantly at war with one another.
