Answer: There are 16 quarters and 10 dimes.

Explanation:

Let x = Number of quarters

y= Number of dimes.

As per given,

x+y = 26 (i)

x= y+6 (ii), substitute this in (i), we get

y+6+y= 26

⇒2y+6=26

⇒ 2y = 26-6=20

⇒ 2y =20

⇒ y =10 [Divide both sides by 2]

Put this in (ii), x= 10+6 =16

So there are 16 quarters and 10 dimes such that 16 (0.25)+10(0.10)= $5 .
